28th-Nov-2009 01:36 pm - On the subject of families
I've seen this come up often enough in fanfiction, and it's driving me nuts. I'm not an expert in family structure or sociology or anything, but I'm reasonably certain that when a child is adopted (i.e.: Not a stepparent adoption, either; the fandom in question this time has a child who was taken in by his best friend's family following his father's arrest), then his relationship with his new brother is not "stepbrothers." They would be "adopted brothers," or simply "brothers" if the linguistics is driving you nuts.

Furthermore, when adoption takes place, I believe "foster" is the wrong term as well. At least in the U.S. (which is where this fandom takes place, though in the future and with aliens, so who knows how that affects child services), the foster care system is meant to be temporary, waiting for either reunification between child and parent or adoption. So I'm pretty sure "foster brothers" would be wrong as well.

28th-Nov-2009 01:30 pm - I'm not a thief, I'm a librarian
During the holidays we each donate some of our time to keep the library open a few extra days when we would normally be closed. The fact that we're donating our time on those days out of the goodness of our hearts and without pay makes any mofoery all the more intolerable.

Case in point, recently a gentleman arrived with a book that belonged to him as well as a number of books that he had borrowed. I happened to notice his book on his arm when he came in, as it was a large, shiny coffee table book with artistic photography and a very bright yellow. I was helping another patron at the time and didn't manage to catch him to discuss our policies on having non-library books here (not forbidden but we have policies for any that resemble our special collections, luckily this book did not). Some time later I was helping a patron find something particularly ambiguous and I noticed that the patron-with-book was sitting at one of our tables in a clearing between shelves on the second floor. I passed him many times in trying to help this patron but always more than 30 feet away and I never took much notice of him after my first trip. About half an hour later I was running an invoice upstairs to the offices before lunch when I heard a patron yelling in the stacks. It happened to be mofo-with-book who, upon seeing me enter the area, stood up and bellowed "It was her! She took my book!" in the most dramatic possible way. I thought it was some kind of bid for attention or a bad joke so I approached the man to ask him to quiet and calm down, since he was visibly agitated. He swept an arm at me and yelled for security, drawing a crowd with his continuing tirade about how he saw me do it and that he was absolutely positive that it was me. I stepped back a bit since he seemed violent and we waited for security to arrive. When our younger security guard came upstairs, mofo-with-book repeated his claim and he was so commanding that I swear for a moment I think the guard was considering removing me just to get the guy to shut up. The police were called and a report was filed (with much loud accusation from him, though we did manage to get them to take it to our rear lobby) and a search of the area showed that the book was in fact gone, though I wouldn't be surprised if the guy had lost it in his pile of books or stashed it somewhere himself. He left in a huff warning one woman that "this library will steal your books!" and that was it. I was accused of stealing, a book no less, in my own place of work. My boss and coworkers have been very supportive, but I did hear someone say to their child as they left "well how do you think they pay for all of these books?" - not sure if it was related. It's really quite demeaning to be put on the spot like that in your own place of work. I hope that mofo gets his, but still, I have to wonder what happened to the book.
